Throughout this series, there have been several common, interwoven threads. Two of those threads are self-control and conspiring men.
This is not coincidental. The purpose of these conspiracies and secret combinations is control.
Wherefore, the Lord commandeth you, when ye shall see these things come among you that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation, because of this secret combination which shall be among you; or wo be unto it, because of the blood of them who have been slain; for they cry from the dust for vengeance upon it, and also upon those who built it up.
For it cometh to pass that whoso buildeth it up seeketh to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries; and it bringeth to pass the destruction of all people, for it is built up by the devil, who is the father of all lies; even that same liar who beguiled our first parents, yea, even that same liar who hath caused man to commit murder from the beginning; who hath hardened the hearts of men that they have murdered the prophets, and stoned them, and cast them out from the beginning.
We are fortunate that Moroni told us the purpose of these conspiracies; otherwise, we would have no idea what is coming. But God saw fit to forewarn us, so we could be ready.
Ready for what? For tyranny and oppression.
Like I said before, and as stated in the verses above, when we discover these secret combinations, we are not supposed to fight them. Apparently, they will just be too entrenched. All we can do is put our trust in God to get us through them and to eventually make us free again.
But all of that means that we need to be ready to live under tyranny. We need to be ready to live under oppression.
In The Book of Mormon, the people of Alma give us an example of how to do so:
And now it came to pass that Amulon began to exercise authority over Alma and his brethren, and began to persecute him, and cause that his children should persecute their children.
And it came to pass that so great were their afflictions that they began to cry mightily to God.
And Amulon commanded them that they should stop their cries; and he put guards over them to watch them, that whosoever should be found calling upon God should be put to death.
And Alma and his people did not raise their voices to the Lord their God, but did pour out their hearts to him; and he did know the thoughts of their hearts.
And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came to them in their afflictions, saying: Lift up your heads and be of good comfort, for I know of the covenant which ye have made unto me; and I will covenant with my people and deliver them out of bondage.
And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions.
And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord.
In other words, we should submit to the Lord and wait on His time.
But we should make sure we are free of as many of the influences of the tyrants we will suffer under. That is why I have said that we should keep the Spirit with us, avoid anger, have charity, avoid becoming radical ideologues, follow the prophet, think for yourself, fear not, have humility, be chaste, avoid addiction, maintain relationships, and stay healthy.
Each of those things is designed, by God, not by me, to reduce the influence and control that evil men have on us. If we carefully do those things, and follow all of God’s other commandments, evil men may be able to oppress us, but they cannot turn us away from God.
So, in essence, this whole series is about how to be ready for the tyranny that is coming.
Be prepared for it. Look to God when it comes.
