Assumed Audience: Everyone in Utah or law enforcement officers considering a move to Utah.

Epistemic Status: Confident.

I’ve mentioned before that I live in Utah.

Now I’ll say that I live in a place with at least a billboard or two.

I say this to mention an ad I see: an ad to apply for Utah Highway Patrol.

Do not join Utah Highway Patrol!

Here’s why: they do not respect the law.

Do you know what FOIA is? Utah has an analog called GRAMA.

At some point, because of a Hacker News thread, I filed GRAMA requests to my local police force(s) and Utah Highway Patrol. The local police force(s) fulfilled my requests.

Utah Highway Patrol stonewalled me.

That is the kind of agency UHP is: they illegally stonewall their residents.

But it gets worse.

My request was about any use of data without warrants as required by the Fourth Amendment. They stonewalled me about abuse of the Fourth Amendment.

Take of that what you will, but what I take from it is that UHP will violate the Fourth Amendment if they can.

If you join UHP, you will be complicit in that.

Do not join Utah Highway Patrol.
